Crude-oil demulsifiers

Demulsifiers assist water separation from crude-oil emulsions during pretreatment and desalting. The appropriate formulation depends on the crude blend, emulsion behavior and available separation conditions.

Application and function

Demulsifier treatment addresses emulsified water and the oil–water interface in crude desalting. It supports water release and phase separation so that salt-containing water can be removed from the crude.

Formulations have different solubility and delivery characteristics. Selection should reflect the actual crude blend; changes in feed or desalter operation can require reassessment.

Information for selection

  • Crude composition, water content and emulsion stability
  • Wash-water quality, mixing conditions and separation temperature
  • Interface behavior, residence time and existing chemical program

Evaluation and technical review

Use representative samples to compare water release, interface clarity and residual water in the oil. Review the separated water as well as the treated crude.

A plant evaluation should record feed changes and desalter operation alongside treatment response. Screening results inform a monitored introduction of the selected formulation.
